about

Stems and Gems

Back in late 2019/early 2020 I sat down with my synths and began composing what, I thought at the time, would be the debut Sentimental Math record. While I've been recording since the late 1980's, the world of MIDI and DAW's was new to me. It was slow going. Throw in a pandemic and a move to an off-grid property and...well, you don't see the debut Sentimental Math record anywhere, do ya? What did come out of those sessions was a 3-track EP (Sentimental Math) and a piece composed for my wife's fledgling yoga studio (Spirit Bird Attempt No. 1).

Recording those 4 tracks also left me with dozens of orphaned tracks. Stops and starts. Aborted compositions. Stems.

They sat on my hard drive for a couple of years and I had no recollection of recording them. Most were single sounds, some modulations here and there but definitely no “songs” in the bunch. I loaded them in my media player and went about my day and realized that they were nice, unobtrusive background noise. I figured if I liked them, maybe someone else would too.

The three tracks that make up the “Gems” collection are of similar origin. They didn't seem to fit with the others so I left them off of “Stems”. Going through the same process, I decided to put them out there as well.

I'm going to try to get that debut record realized this year. I can't guarantee, however, that 2025 will not see a similar two-collection release. Blems? Mlems?

Stay tuned.
